The Book of Night Women-Marlon James

I just turned the last pages of this book after opening it a day ago-that I've read it so quickly is testament alone to how good it is. I bought it in October 2009 and decided not to read it until I had some free time as I had assignments to hand in and exams to prepare for-and boy! am I glad I waited.

First off, The Book of Night Women is not for the squeamish. It's not for those who can't handle the raw truth of what the authors portrays in his second masterpiece (I was still reeling from his first novel when this one hit me for six lol). At this point, I have no words to say how much this book affected me. I cannot attempt to dissect it or lay the themes out systematically in any form or fashion for I will surely fail.

So what IS the book about? James takes us to Jamaica, where he weaves a historically accurate tale that has been told time and time again but in such a 'new' way so as to stun the reader about the role of slavery in West Indian history. More specifically, he gives a loud and thunderous voice to the role of the woman in slave rebellions as well as her role in being the glue that held the West Indian plantation together. More so, the pages of his book whispers of the role that all women (slave, white, mulatto, maroon) played and continues to play in our collective societies...

I'd love to do a full review once I get my thoughts together but if you love books, this one is a MUST read!

So no, this post isn't about make up! But I've decided to share with you one of the meal replacements I've started using on my quest to shed some weight and reverse my PCOS symptoms. While I try to figure out my body I've been experimenting with different types of foods and fruits and I've realized that what works best for me is a diet consisting of no processed foods and very little to no sugar (unless it's the natural sugar from fruits). I've been adjusting to the new change for a week now and I've already lost 6lbs and 10" overall. The above is one of my meal/snack options....a smoothie made from pineapple, orange juice and a frozen berry medley (raspberries, blue berries strawberries and black berries). It's delicious and very filling. Try it!

What I've been up to!

Hey's been ages, I know! Truth be told, I'm actually on holiday in my home country and I've been so busy with catching up with family and friends that I've been neglecting my blog :(
I promise to rectify this. That said, I have a few reviews on the way so keep an eye out for those!
